Skills to Support the
KeyStages of Learning
Acquisition of knowledge
The first stage of learning is the acquisition of knowledge. Simply put, students must get the information they need to know from the source into their brain. To do this, students must understand the process of learning, why and how study skills improve their ability to acquire knowledge.
With The 21st Century Student’s Guide to Study Skills, students learn skills and strategies for mastering the acquisition of knowledge. These include metacognition, overcoming a fixed mindset, exploiting their personal learning styles and intelligences, multimodal learning, establishing a pre-learning routine, and correctly utilizing the syllabus, active listening, note-taking, and chapter outlining.
Retention of knowledge
Much of what we learn is not meant to be remembered for a long time, so our brains quickly let go of the information. Other knowledge, such as what students learn in school, is meant to be remembered for a long time. If a student forgets information too soon after a lesson, they will not be a successful student. Good study skills include practices and strategies for improving the ability to retain information for a longer period of time for deeper and more comprehensive learning.
With The 21st Century Student’s Guide to Study Skills, students learn skills and strategies for mastering the ability to retain knowledge, include time-spaced learning, mnemonics, and content recall exercises.
Successful demonstration of knowledge
Even a student who has successfully acquired and retained knowledge can underachieve if they are unable to successfully demonstrate that knowledge when tested. A key stage of successful learning is the ability to demonstrate knowledge in a variety of ways.
With The 21st Century Student’s Guide to Study Skills, students learn skills and strategies for mastering the ability to demonstrate knowledge, including strategies for a variety of tests: essay, multiple-choice, short response and more, overcoming test anxiety, developing critical thinking skills and oral presentation skills, conquering the challenges of distance learning, and more.
But just because our goals are serious doesn’t mean students can’t have a little fun! Comics, characters, and enjoyable practice activities bring study skills to life and make learning these important skills a breeze.
